Galerie Gutleut is a contemporary art gallery located in Mainz, Germany. Transforming a former shopping mall into a giant space for art and creative exchange, the gallery was renovated with the intent of preserving the tracks of its history – everything was generously painted over in thick black while leaving tiles, cables and pipes exposed as visible elements.
The catalogue »Vol. 1« aims to translate the first group exhibition into a printed publication by adapting the visual heritage and creating an additional canvas for the different positions of the 26 featured artists.
21 × 27 cm
96 pages
Open thread-stitching
Dust jackets in three variations
Printed on Munken Paper
★ Awarded at Designpreis Rheinland-Pfalz
★ Nominated for German Design Award
On 96 pages – printed on rough Munken paper – the catalogue showcases selected artworks of all artists.
A variable grid systems enables each double-spread to find the right tone for the individual artist. Yet the design is able to give orientation and stability with its recurrent static elements.
The bilingual catalogue features an additional oversight of all artists in inverted font and background colour. This visual distinction is adapted for all English texts for an instinctive way of navigating through the publication.
The open thread-stitching exposes the inner structure of the publication and therefore serves as a visual nod to the roughly renovated exhibition space.
With its small oddities the chosen typeface doubles down on these subtle imperfections.
The catalogue is available with three individual dust-jackets. At first sight merely showcasing a clipping of an artwork, it eventually unfolds to a poster, that like the gallery itself invites to actively explore.
